Samurize Vista Sidebar 4 by halfwayglad

There is a sidebar for Rainmeter but it uses images taken from my sidebar. Please consider downloading this version instead.

If you are downloading this for Windows Vista and encounter any problems, please notify me--I may be able to provide a fix for Vista bugs.

You need the Windows Vista cleartype fonts: You can download the fonts here:

They come with Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2007. You may delete the viewer after the fonts are installed.

Update 1.5; 6-3-07

Updated all plugins to the newest versions
Added a new iPhone gadget (iPod and lock functionality only due to font size constraints)
Added a new Longhorn Clocks gadget
Added various functionality to gadgets (Comedy Central, RSS, Calendar, Slideshow)
Updated the Halo 3 Countdown to September 25, 2007.
Added a Sidebar Hover Option (it's a nice little touch)
Various graphical fixes

Update 1.4

Fixed the Gadget Picker Glass
Enhanced the gadget Selector Prompt
Updated the Date Calendar Graphics and Calendar Events
Fixed the Digital Clock font
Updated the Clock Icons for the gadget Selector
Changed the ESPNews icon

Update 1.3

Enhanced the gadget selector
Added the User Icon/System info gadget
Added the tray Icon to the Vista Sidebar InI for easier access
Added automatically changing names for all clocks (each is now configured to display the username, not my name)
The sidebar will now automatically place itself on the right side of your screen.

Update 1.2

Updated the glass graphics to be more realistic.
Added the Colbert Report and Daily Show gadgets to the Extras.
Added the Windows Media Player 11 Object for the Media Player (all versions).
Fixed a bug with the system clock that caused the 'Mouse Enter Config" Input Image functions to malfunction.

Update 1.1

Fixed and Updated the media player graphics
Added support for WinAMP and Windows Media Player
Added Word of the Day gadget
Added "Extras" selection into gadget selector (for future gadget releases)

--In order for the installation to complete successfully, you MUST close all running instances and configs, AND any open Samurize programs (configuration editor, instance manager, etc.)

--Make sure you have Serious Samurize 1.64.2 or above installed

--You must have the Windows Vista cleartype fonts (see link on deviantart) and included fonts installed ***

To install:

1. Double Click the Samurize Vista Sidebar 4 executable and extract the folders and files to your Samurize directory.

NOTE: The directory MUST be C:\Program Files\Samurize or the sidebar will NOT work. Double check to make sure each folder has been copied to the correct location.

2. When prompted, replace ANY config, plugin, image, or script with the one included with the sidebar to ensure that everything works properly.

3. Install the included and Vista system fonts (PowerPoint Viewer).

4. Place the halo2.wav file into your Samurize directory (Halo Countdown file).

5. Start the Instance Manager and under the 'Default' instance, click on the bottom left corner to edit. Select the "Vista Sidebar.ini."

6. Run the Default Instance.

7. At this point, you should be able to click the '+' (Add Gadgets) button.

*** To load any gadgets on startup, you must run the Instance Manager and next to each active instance, click edit and make sure "Run client on Startup" is checked. ***

--Most gadgets have a popup menu when you place your mouse over a gadget so that you may select a variation. Gadgets can also be customized using the configuration editor (Config.exe).

--To refresh the RSS (Sports and NY Times) you must click the 'more headlines' link.

--To configure the weather, open the Weather2004.ini in your Samurize>;plugins folder and edit the default code to your location and save. Make sure all weather instances are closed during this process.

--To use the media player with Windows Media Player 11, you must select the Samurize Info Plugin in WMP11 from 'View' > ';Plugins' > 'Other'

--When the recycle bin has files in it, you may notice some system performance degradation. The plugin creator has already been notified.

-If the Sticky Notes font appears jagged or if you prefer a cleaner look, try Notetaker.dll, part of the Plugin Pack at It offers auto scrolling when typing and smoother fonts. It is not included here because for many, the existing textpad.dll is fine.

If you encounter any bugs, would like to request a gadget, or have any general comments, feel free to message me.

Thanks, took me a while to find the option but it is working nice now. Great software btw.
i'm kinda new to it but will try to learn it more. Dont understand what the server does really ?
Client and manager are more obvious to me.

First let me say thank you for this awsome sidebar halfwayglad.

I recently changed from Vista to XP again since Vista was eating all my memory for breakfast.

anyway only thing i miss from vista was a nice sidebar and here i found your nice sidebar. I am very new to Samurize but i made it load and could add the + to open the widgets but one thing i can not do is to actually add the widgets into the sidebar!
is this suppose to work like that or can the widgets be added to the sidebar like vista?
Please help me on this.

All i can do now is to move on on the sidebar manually but this was the get behind the sidebar so i cant move the once i have droped them on the sidebar (widget just goes behind the sidebar so to say).

Hope to hear from you.
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Mar 19, 2009
You need to set the sidebar background to pin to desktop and move the gadgets manually. Samurize doesn't have the functionality to auto add them.
sfxman Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2009
Found how to make it stay after pressing show desktop, just added the pin to desktop (not the compatibility mode one...) to all active gadgets in the instance manager. Now it survives show desktop.

The only issue now is that the background of the Vista Sidebar is always on top when I press show desktop...
sfxman Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2009

Fantastic work!

However, my question is: is it in any way possible to get the gadgets to stay visible even though I press the "show desktop"-button in my quick launch bar?

Otherwise the gadgets don't very useful since if I have ~2-5 windows open I have to minimize each one separately to see my gadgets.

Another option is that they are always on top, but they slide out only when I put the cursor to the edge of the screen.

Any of these two possible using special docking settings, positioning settings, or whatever?

Simplemente fantastico¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

this sidebar is awesome!!
a little query tough- I feel that the vista.ini background gadget is little dark and i would like it to decrease its opacity. can u tell me how do I go about it?
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Sep 10, 2008
You should be able to open the vista.ini in the Samurize config program and reduce the opacity there.
salmaniac Featured By Owner Sep 10, 2008  Student Digital Artist
reduced the alpha blending.
thanks :-)

So far I really like this, but I am trying to figure out how to get the mail checker working - can I configure it to check a Gmail account? Where can I find instructions to help me get it working?
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2008
Your best bet would be to search the Samurize forums. They are always pretty quick about answering questions - just make sure you search first! =)
ruan-brown Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2008
Wow. good!
tchri33 Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2008
How I can install this I do not understand the instructions
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2008
The instructions are as detailed as I can make them without actually doing it for you. If you don't understand, try scouring the comments - someone may have had a similar issue.
hannaxbear Featured By Owner Aug 23, 2008
This looks really cool, as you have some gadgets that look slightly different from the ones I've seen available for the original Vista Sidebar. However, I'm wondering if there is any benefit for a Vista user, such as myself, to use this instead of the Vista Sidebar that comes included with my operating system? For example, does it use less memory (Vista Sidebar has two instances running on my computer, one that is about 8MB and the other is 9MB)? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks in advance.
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Aug 23, 2008
The memory usage is about the same. I personally use my sidebar on vista because I like the gadgets better, but for someone who already has Vista and is content with the Windows sidebar, Samurize has a bit of a learning curve.
hannaxbear Featured By Owner Aug 23, 2008
By itself (without your sidebar), does Samurize use the same amount of memory as Vista Sidebar? I ask because I was thinking of using Samurize and some plugins/scripts to replace Vista Sidebar since it often crashes or lags when I've put the computer to sleep for a while or something like that.
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Aug 23, 2008
Samurize is very lightweight. I'd recommend it for widgets if you don't mind the extra effort.
hannaxbear Featured By Owner Aug 23, 2008
All right, thanks so much. (:

It uses Samurize. Please read the instructions that I typed up to avoid questions like this =).

Hello! Instance Manager, what is it??? And where I can found it?
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2008
It's part of Samurize and can be found under the tools folder in the programs menu.

Ok so in these comments I came across someone saying to open the config in the directory, and select open and select vistasidebar.ini which I did, but I still can't seem to open it. I'm using vista if it makes a difference. Any advice? :|
halfwayglad Featured By Owner Mar 21, 2008
To open the sidebar, open the instance manager under samurize. Under the default instance, you want to select the vistasidebar.ini. Loading the default instance should not load a blank sidebar where you can put gadgets.

Great one! However I can't get the mail checker to work (complains about server error)... does this work with any kind of accounts, i.e. also IMAP (I have a normal account that is SSL-secured)?
